The aim of the study was to investigate the knowledge, practices, and professional interactions related to phlebotomy among healthcare providers at a district health facility in Cape Town. The study was prompted by serious deficiencies in phlebotomy knowledge among nurses and doctors identified in earlier research at the facility.
Healthcare workers must understand phlebotomy procedures and hazards to minimize risks and prevent specimens from being rejected by laboratories (Banković Radovanović, 2020). Separate studies indicated that 92% of registered phlebotomy practitioners in South Africa attained a score below the minimum standard and that less than 22% complied with critical phlebotomy practices (Bölenius et al., 2013). Instances of improper or erroneous procedures were evidently elevated .
