The multidisciplinary approach represents one of the most promising mechanisms for quality improvement in patient-centered care.
The multidisciplinary approach represents one of the most promising mechanisms for quality improvement in patient-centered care, especially in complex surgical fields. As an illustrative example, the combination of dental facial surgery, maxillofacial surgery, radiology, and nursing reflects a convergence of expertise that improves patient outcomes. Radiology procedures report the varied scope and capacity of imaging technologies available for integration into surgical and treatment planning in both dental facial and maxillofacial surgery. Nursing services provide the liaison and advocacy necessary for coordinating efficient patient flow before, during, and after inpatient treatment. Extending the model suggests a future emphasis on continuity of care encompassing increased involvement of preventive specialist care and greater space within the specialized university hospital environment for professional training and development in multidisciplinary collaboration.
